"Despite dictionary definitions, public libraries have always been more concerned with content than carrier. Increasingly information, ideas and works of imagination are available in electronic form. Unless public libraries are in a position to delivery electronically, the gap between the information rich and the information poor will widen disastrously."
The Library Association prepared the first bid to the Millennium
Commission which, although it was acknowledged to
have the potential millennial impact required, needed more work on its
technical feasibility and financial viability. In his
capacity as Chief Executive of the Library Association, Ross Shimmon
was invited to join the Board because the LA and
the Library & Information Commission are the two major partners in
Information for All.
Ross Shimmon began his career as a library assistant at Portsmouth Central Library. He worked in public libraries in Hampshire and Bexley. His first national role was as Professional Assistant to the Library Advisers at the Department of Education & Science. He taught librarianship at Southampton, Aberystwyth and Papua New Guinea. He was Reader Services Librarian and Deputy at Preston Polytechnic. He has worked for The Library Association for nearly 13 years, the last four and a half as Chief Executive.
