".Public Libraries must have Internet access to ensure that the latest forms of information can be made available to anyone, putting libraries at the heart of the community. Not to do so would diminish any chance of comprehensiveness and efficiency. By connecting libraries as part of a national programme, a whole range of information services to assured standards can be developed, keeping the UK at the forefront of the information revolution. "
"I was attracted into public libraries by the possibilities of computer
based information systems to support public knowledge, and by 1974 was
developing library systems for Leicestershire with Plessey and BLCMP.
Responsible for PR and IT in Hertfordshire, I worked with ALS on public
access catalogues and EDI developments, and more recently helped set up the
library service's web site. In 1995 I planned for and helped set up a
telecottage run by the local
Parish Council, which sets out to provide access to IT in a rural area, and
employs local people to provide training and other services.
"I was appointed as Project Manager to Information for All at the end of August as it seemed to me that involvement would enable to take part in a critically important project to realise my own vision of a library as the place where all knowledge is ultimately available, tailored with the help of skilled staff to an individual's needs.
